Manchester Visit - Class 3

On Thursday 15th June 2023, our Class 3 pupils visited Manchester for a busy and enjoyable day.

To begin, pupils and staff made their way to the impressive Bridgewater Hall to ‘Come and Play with the Halle’ - a brilliantly interactive concert in which a number of pupils from different schools across Cheshire East accompany the word-famous Halle orchestra. For the majority of our children, it was the very first opportunity to see a professional orchestra in person - and the Halle certainly didn’t disappoint! Pupils’ favourite performance was unquestionably the Star Wars finale. Over the course of the summer term, Mr Scarterfield had been preparing the children for their vocal and recorder accompaniment pieces. The event was thoroughly enjoyed by both pupils and staff and we extend our thanks to Mr Scarterfield and Mrs Latchford for making all of the necessary arrangements.

To support pupils’ local history study, ‘Manchester: From Mancunium to Cottonopolis to Today’ pupils welcomed the opportunity to explore areas of the city centre on foot - looking at how the city has been regenerated and reborn in the wake of post-industrialisation and the fall of Manchester as the pre-eminent city for worldwide cotton production. Pupils were able to see at close quarters, how buildings originally built for the trade and storage of cotton exports have been repurposed for new economies, such as leisure and tourism, being transformed into bars, museums and restaurants.

Pupils were excited to visit Castlefield, to learn all about the Roman origins of the city - which was studied in lesson one of the unit - identifying the location of the junction between the main Roman roads stretching from Chester to York and Buxton to Ribchester. Pupils imagined what it would have been like in that exact location 2,000 years ago - a modest wooden Roman fort surrounded by fields and trees. Whilst in Castlefield, we took the opportunity to grab a class photo in front of the reconstruction Roman fort.

Following our swift visit to the Roman gardens, we made the short walk to the Museum of Science and Industry. Here, children enjoyed a spot of lunch before having time to explore three separate exhibition areas and watch an interactive presentation, ‘The Power of Industry’ which focussed on Manchester part in the development of new technologies and industries over the last 250 years - pupils we fascinated to learn that they were sat on the exact spot of the world’s oldest railway station - Liverpool Street Station - which opened in 1830!

The use of visits, visitors and school residentials has been identified as one of our key curriculum guiding principles and the opportunity to inspire pupils’ love of music and history through this visit was one not to be missed! We hope you enjoy browsing through our gallery….
